Fantastical Muses

I heard a rumbling late one night,

It sounded loud and clear.

It made me shiver deep inside,

But not with fright or fear.

I mused about the sound it made,

For what could make that roar?

Perhaps skyscraper’s collapse,

Cannon’s blast! Viking ships galore!

I thought of all the thrilling ways

A cannon might be shot,

But maybe it wasn’t that at all-

A volcano, glowing hot?

That mountain, threatening to explode

Upon our very heads!

The boom of a monstrous T-Rex

As he not-so-gently treads.

Aliens from outer space

Striking at our earth!

A vengeful dragon’s assault!

The breaking of a curse?

An earthquake ready to destroy,

The forging of a shadow?

Or perhaps the Great Bear was shot

By Orion’s deadly arrow!

I thought of all the wondrous things

That could have made the sound,

My mind searched every corner,

For the reason to be found.

Anything could happen,

Anything to me.

So every possibility

Was possible to see.
