Wisdom for Moths

To all of my six legged friends
Who spend your days taking flight
If you’d not like to meet a quick end
I’d advise you not fly towards the light

If you have one hundred eyes
And you’re yellow or purple or blue
If you would like to be wise
The light’s a bad option for you

If you value your exoskeleton
Steer clear of the beams of white
Either that or be turned to gelatin
Avoid them every night

If you’re flying one lonely evening
And you wander too close to the glare
There’ll be no time for fleeing
You’ll be instantly flattened there

When you flutter too close to the highway
And your having the worst of luck
If you see lights, please fly away
Or you’ll get nailed by a truck

The cars have lights built into them
Watch out or you’ll be toast
Hundreds of bugs have been condemned
Watch out or join the host

If by chance you get too near
Every termite or green katydid
It will end your flying career
You’ll be turned to a smudge on the grid

This message is wrote just for you
Winged arthropods near or far
If you don’t listen then you-know-who
Is washing the front of our car
