The Book

This is a SS (Short story) that I made when I was younger. Please leave a comment! I like knowing what your favorite parts were, and seeing how I can improve as a writer! Hope you enjoy!

A beautiful, slim, teenage girl was gazing hopefully up at a book with a golden covering that had strange words etched upon it’s cover. It was high on a library shelf, with no practical way to it, for no ladders came anywhere near it. A tanned, handsome teenage boy, Raskel, came strolling in out of the blistering sun. Sauntering over to the stunning girl whose name was Lily, he asked her what she was staring at. She replied, “Oh, just a book that doesn’t have any ladders leading to it.” Raskel glanced up and saw a chandelier hanging peacefully above a ladder, which could be reached by a fairly tall person. That’s when a very risky and daring plan came to mind. The chandelier was very close to the golden book. If he could swing on it right, he would be able to get to that book. Driven by a weird feeling of love, he decided to do it. He looked at Lily, and she could see a mischievous glimmer in his eye. Lily quickly turned away and decided to look at that enticing book instead.

A few minutes later, Raskel was swinging bravely or stupidly on the chandelier. Lily watched with great distress, because she knew that this could be fatal. Raskel was getting quite close now to the book and was thinking that he was just about to get the book. Lily was quite sure something terrible was about to happen, so she closed her eyes. Raskle reached for the book with trembling hands, thinking his quest would be over in just a few more seconds. Raskle, who was still stubbornly holding on to the fixture, grasped the book’s cover, and felt the book begin to slide forward.

Lily, who still had her eyes closed, heard a tremendous crash and jerked her eyes open. Then there was silence. She turned her head hesitantly, afraid of what she might see. The sight that she beheld made her gasp. Twisted metal and jagged glass were thrown about like a toddler had had a tantrum. After that shock, she searched with her eyes for a idiot young fool. At first she could not find him. Then after a few heart rending seconds, she found his bruised, blooded and crumbled body in the far corner of the library. “Well that hurt!” Raskel moaned. The girl, greatly distressed, came to his aid. “This turned out to be a positively horrible day,” Lily murmured as she began to drag the hapless teen away from the wreckage of the chandelier.

“If it makes you feel any better, I got the book,” Raskel groaned.

  1. Well Jane, loved your punch line! I think just saying someone is good looking isn’t enough, it needs a bit more description. Your line “Twisted metal and jagged glass were thrown about like a toddler had had a tantrum” after the chandelier broke was well placed I think, it gives a very clear picture of the scene.

  2. So great! I found myself exclaiming, Oh NO!!!” When Raskel crashed and Maurice asked me, “What’s wrong?” I guess that means you drew me into the story! Good job! Loved it!
