Where I’m From

I am from broken keyboards

From Sharpies and MicroPerforate.

I am from the lost pencils tucked in the couch

(Sharp, pointed, they poked at my skin).

I am from big, green jackfruits

The sweet, sappy fruit that smells up the house

I am from warm rolls and wavy hair,

From Joan and Geraldine.

I’m from the education nerds and question askers,

From before you do what you want to do, look around for what needs to be done.

I’m from the Good Shepherd,

Whose guidance I love so dearly.

I’m from Avon and Vientiane

Khao beak and tacos.

From the eight scars on my sister’s body,

The trauma of my brother’s window fall.

All over the house are varieties of pictures,

Showing my swirly life.

From traditional Lao outfits

To us kids, in our parents’ wedding redo,

The Shepherd’s love shines on me.
